What is ECU Remapping or Chiptuning?
Getting the most performance out our car is what we're constantly trying to achieve, but did you know the first step to the upgrade path is not a bolt on part, but an ECU tune. So why is an ECU tune so important? Well... It will allow you to take your car out on the weekend and have some fun. Back to business as usual come Monday morning. Or when your ready to hit the town you can switch to Valet mode, so they don't have to much fun with it, and then right back to having fun when you want. Now that's great, but how does it all work?
All modern vehicles in the last few decades have an ECU, or engine control unit to monitor and control your engine. Think of it as the brain of your engine. The ECU connects to a multitude of sensors all over your engine. Like the MAF Sensor in the air intake. Each sensor is unique and sends information to the ECU about the parameter it's monitoring. There are 100's of parameters monitoring simultaneously. From basic Air Fuel Ratio, Timing and Boost. To something more complicated like Turbo Dynamic, and Wheel Slip Percentage.
Then the ECU takes this information, and then does calculations to run what the Manufacture wanted it to. Now each Manufacture has programmed or tuned your car from the factory. They have made decisions on the way your car should run based on a number of factors. Like performance and fuel economy. For an example a Nissan GT-R is tuned from the factory to give out the most power, so it's going to be less fuel efficient. Where a base model Corolla will be tuned for the best fuel economy. So you might not get to your location fast, but your going to have a lot of fuel. These tunes are accessible, and can be adjustable to your desired results, and that's what ECU tuning is all about.
What Exactly Does ECU Remapping or Reflashing Do?
Now that we understand what Remapping is & how it is simply carried out. We can dive a little deeper into how ECU remapping can actually benefit & enhance your motor:
Increased Power Capabilities – One of the most common changes of ECU remapping is to increase the power capabilities of the motor. This will allow the driver to accelerate much quicker, seeing an increase in 0-60 & overall top speeds. This will generally increase fuel consumption due to a noticeable increase in output.
Improved Responsiveness & Fuel Efficiency – But ECU remapping isn’t just about speed and power; it can also improve the responsiveness of your car and its fuel efficiency by allowing you to reduce the number of gear changes required to overtake and perform other driving situations which require torque and horsepower, but it does require you to perform these correctly.
Should I Remap My Car?
Is it safe to do? Is Chip Tuning the same thing? Is it good or bad for your car? These are some of the most common questions asked when it comes down to remapping. In short, remapping is great for those who primarily want to get the best out of their car. By this we mean increasing horsepower, increasing performance & optimising for efficiency. Let’s look a little more closely at some of the questions you may have:
Is ECU re-mapping safe and legal? - Yes, it’s safe to do as long as it’s done correctly by a trained professional. We highly recommend you inform your insurance provider if your car has been modified, as most consider remapping as a car modification, and you will generally see an increase in your insurance premium if you decide to go ahead with remapping your motor.
Can remapping damage your engine? – No. Not if done correctly. Although, the changes you make may put further strain on the engine. If the remapping is done by a trained professional, then your engine will be perfectly safe.
Can it be done to all cars? – Not necessarily. We often find that cars built before 2000 are simply just too old and therefore do not possess the ability to be ECU tuned.
Does it affect your insurance? - We strongly recommend that you tell your insurance provider if your car has been modified. Most, if not all, consider remapping as a car modification. You will generally see an increase in your insurance premium if you decide to go ahead with remapping your motor.
Are diesel engines worth remapping?
Diesel tuning is very popular because of how well diesel engines respond. When it comes to remapping diesel engines, we can offer economy and performance remapping or even a mixture of both. An effective ECU remap will breathe new life into your diesel car.
Our BlueOptimize products are designed specifically for engine remapping diesel vehicles, with the benefit of having lower fuel consumption and emissions, which in turn will save you money.
But Dj's Custom Remaps specialism goes further than just standard car remapping, with our expert diesel ECU remap offering a large increase over stock power, it’s also very popular for fleet operators, as it vastly improves fuel economy.
How much does ECU Remapping or Chiptuning cost?
At Dj's Custom Remaps, we understand that every customer has different needs and budgets when it comes to remapping their engine. That’s why we offer a range of remap options to suit your specific requirements.
Our entry-level ‘Stage 1′ remap offers a light reprogramming of your engine’s settings to provide a noticeable boost in performance. This option typically costs a few hundred pounds.
For those looking for more significant gains, our ‘Stage 2’ remap involves some additional engine modifications such as a new air filter and exhaust improvements. This option is more expensive than Stage 1 but less than Stage 3.
For those seeking the ultimate in performance, our ‘Stage 3’ and above remaps are the most serious options available. These involve major engine upgrades such as new turbo systems and internal components like pistons to extract maximum performance from your vehicle. Due to the level of work involved, these options can cost several thousands of pounds.
